I just noticed that my last post was my first post in 7 months. I blame part of this on being busy or lazy (probably both). But another reason is probably that I have been playing with Twitter and Facebook - add me as a friend if we are not already. I hope/plan to post here a little more frequently but I suspect that Twitter will continue to get more of my attention.

ECM Project Success – Best Practices

Collaborate 08 finished over a month ago. I didn’t get around to providing commentary on the event – I blame it on twitter. Bex provided good coverage of the event here, here, here and here. I made two presentations. I’ve had a few request for my ECM Project Success presentation. They are suppose to be posted on the Collaborate site but I can’t find them so I wanted to provide the ppt here.

I co-presented this session with Tom Tonkin and Bex. I focused on two topics. The first topic was on three best practices focused on users (requirements, training & support and usability). The second topic was on how it is important to treat ECM as a program not a project. By that I mean you need to think about things from a broader perspective so that you can implement and support multiple projects. Concepts include executive sponsorship, standards, strategic infrastructure, development center of excellence, communication, etc. The last slide of the ppt depicts a structure that supports these concepts. In my experience, ECM project success or failure is rarely about technology and almost always about these other topics. What has been your experience?

Oracle OpenWorld – Content Management

Oracle OpenWorld starts tomorrow in San Francisco. I am looking forward to it. There is going to be over 45,000 attendees and it ends with concerts by Billy Joel, Lenny Kravitz and Stevie Nicks in the Cow Palace. I will be there from Sunday to Thursday. I will mainly be interested in the Content Management topics. All of the details on the content management tracks can be found here. I will be hosting one-on-one sessions on content management (sign-up for a session if you are interested), meeting with several customers and co-presenting a session. The session is entitled “Strategy and Vision for Oracle Content Management” and it is on Tuesday at 10:45am in Moscone West 3008 – L3.

There is also a interesting community forming around the show.

I joined Facebook about two months ago and it is starting to get me hooked. If you have an account, feel free to add me as a friend. My profile is here. I like how it has become a platform for app development and allows me to tie together many of my favorite apps including Flickr, del.icio.us, and twitter. Speaking of Twitter, I am still trying to figure out a good use for it. This article has some good use cases for Twitter.

I do wish that there was an easier way to get an rss feed of the Facebook “News Feed“. It looks like someone has developed a php script that scrapes your account page and produces a rss feed but you have to run your own version of the php script. I don’t understand why Facebook does not offer this feature – it would drive more traffic back to their site.

Curt Schilling’s Official Blog

I usually don’t follow the Red Sox and I am usually irritated by the amount of baseball media coverage the Red Sox and Yankees receive – the first 1/3 of almost every Baseball Tonight on ESPN is taken up by coverage of the two teams and not to mention that most every nationally televised games usually includes one of the two teams.

The one Red Sox site that I like to read is Curt Schilling’s Official blog. Curt’s posts allow you to get inside his head and are a great source of inside information. You really get a sense for who he is and because of it I have become of bigger Curt Schilling fan. Check out his latest post that describes his most recent game where he was only one out shy of his first major league no hitter. Also, notice how the AP article quotes from his blog post.

ECM and SOA

There is a good conversation going between James McGovern (here and here) and Raoul Miller (here and here) about ECM and SOA that is worth following. Raoul has worked with many of Oracle’s largest ECM customers and has a deep understanding of complex architectures and infrastructures. James has one of the most popular blogs on Enterprise Architecture (plus his pictures always make the read entertaining). I do wish that James made it easier to link to individual stories on his blog (James, it would be great if the title of each of your posts provided a permanent url to the post like most blogs).

Oracle ECM’s SOA architecture is something that a lot of our customers take advantage of when integrating Oracle ECM with other applications. Bud Porter-Roth has a good article on AIIM about SOA & ECM. As more companies start to treat ECM as infrastructure SOA will become event more important.

Lost is good again

At the beginning of this season Lost was starting to lose my interest because it was getting tedious but the second half of the season sucked me back in. This week’s two hour finale was great and now we have “flash forwards” (more links here, here & here) to add to the complexity of the show.

24 on the other hand continues to bore me this season. The producers should learn from Lost.
